Kate Snider

Architectural Designer. River Runner. Lecturer.

From the time she began to walk, Kate followed on the heels of her big brother Zach. Luckily, he was a kind and intelligent brother, and he quickly realized that Kate possessed a quick wit, a plethora of useful talents, and a healthy sense of adventure, so he was always happy to have her tagging along. Kate came to Charlottesville of her own volition in 1997 to pursue a degree in Architecture at the University of Virginia- in a field that she believed she could finally marry her seemingly contradictory interests in Art and Science. Kate’s hunch was correct. Her years at UVA, and her involvement in the school’s first ever award winning Solar Decathlon Competition, spawned an insatiable passion for design and sustainability that would eventually take her to New Mexico where she worked as an apprentice for a small firm called Solar Design and Analysis- and designed a completely solar powered 16,000 square foot research center in Capitol Reef National Park, as well as a number of hybrid solar residences around the Southwest USA. Before finally reuniting with her family and reconnecting with roots in Charlottesville, Kate’s attended Princeton University and received her Master’s of Architecture and spent a year in New York City managing projects for Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis Architects. Kate is currently a studio critic and lecturer in the Architecture School at the University of Virginia and often travels to Fayetteville, West Virginia where can usually be found upside down in a kayak, or guiding nice people down rivers in rafts.
